The second biggest award show of the season is done.
You know it's the truth. If anybody tells you that the Golden Globe Awards is bigger than the Academy Awards, you'd laugh at them.
That is, if you actually cared about awards show.
Well, I do.
Because awards shows are a great way to know if the people who think they matter are on the same wavelength as the rest of us not so important people when choosing the best in film and television in 2011.
And because I just really want to know who wins at these things.
And because they all look so shiny and sparkly.
Here are my some of my comments, random thoughts, best of show picks and burning questions relating to the 69th Golden Globe Awards. Or you can just skip ahead and check the results. :)
- Ricky Gervais is back! And in fine form, at that. Loved his opening monologue as host, which wasn't as cringe inducing as the 2011 show. There are critics who say that this year's show was boring, but I think Ricky got it right. I think many were waiting for the worst, and when it didn't, thought it was less great than it actually, really was. And it's obvious that last year's awards ceremony is still fresh on everyone's mind. Every time he mentioned a show or an actor, you know they're praying that it's not followed by a joke. My choices for his hosting or joke highlights are: "Tonight, you get Britain's biggest comedian, hosting the world's second biggest award show, on America's third biggest network.... Sorry, fourth, it's fourth."; Jodi Foster's beaver; the continuation of his ridicule of last year's "The Tourist" when introducing Johnny Depp; and his introduction of George Clooney.
- Gerald Butler tried to make a joke, which was both badly timed and just bad. Awkward much.
- Seth Rogen joked that he was concealing an erection caused by co-presenter Kate Beckinsale. Awkward. Really awkward.
- Burning question no. 1: What is the secret to Jessica Alba's glowing skin? Seriously, it's not makeup and I can't stop staring at her every time she came on screen. I actually pressed rewind a couple of times.
- Best presenters: William H. Macy and Felicity Huffman. Find it on YouTube. It's awesome.
- Best comeback contender: Madonna, after Ricky's joke that she's still just like a virgin, "If I'm just like a virgin, Ricky, then why don't you do something about it? I haven't kissed a girl in a few years... on TV."
- Congratulations to Matt LeBlanc on his much deserved win for Best Actor in a TV Series Comedy for his work on Episodes! Although I think he should have won a long time ago for his work on Friends. Have you heard Joey Tribbiani's southern accent? You really, really should.
- Burning question no. 2: Why does Bradley Cooper's mustache look like that?
- God won an award! Well, actually it's Morgan Freeman, but he is a very effective film God. Anybody else attempting it would just look cartoonish in comparison. Winning the Cecille B. Demille Award, which was presented by Sidney Poitier and Dame Helen Mirren, comes in the heels of his recent recognition as the Favorite Movie Icon at the 38th People's Choice Awards.
- Best acceptance speech: Modern Family creator Steve Levitan translating Sofia Vergara's acceptance speech for their show's win as Best TV Series Comedy or Musical in Spanish. Look it up on YouTube, too.
- Best comeback winner: Colin Firth, after Ricky's joke that he's racist and punched a blind kitten, "As I was on my way in, I noticed some very angry, religious people outside with big placards threatening us all with brimstone and pestilence and perdition for our sins...... What they don't realize is, we have Ricky."
