Look! It's the first award show of 2013!
And it's the fun one!
Although, finding a way to watch it wasn't as fun as actually getting to watch it.
It took an entire day for me to realize that I can't find a copy of the 39th Annual People's Choice Awards to watch online, because I kept insisting on placing an apostrophe after the word People, which is apparently not practiced by the kind internet denizens who made the award show accessible for those who live in areas without a local telecast. That's what I get for being a strict apostrophe user.
Was it worth the near-frustration? Sure, the show had its share of awkward moments. But, those moments weren't as many as last year and it proved to be a fun show to watch. The actors are usually more relaxed at the People's Choice Awards and are more free with their humor without all the cursing that happens at the MTV Movie Awards. And you don't get to hear the fans scream in glee (a right they earned for voting or just plain excitement for being in the same room with celebrities they actually like) that much in the stuffier and more "serious" award shows. Well, except if it's the Teen Choice Awards, where the screaming of teenage fans are never-ending and makes you wonder if they have iron lungs.
Here are some of my comments, random thoughts, best of show moments and burning questions
relating to the show. Or you can just skip ahead to check out the
results. :)
- If I ever learned anything from the fun opening skit that showcased host Kaley Cuoco getting tips about being a kick-ass heroine, it's that I hope the world never experiences an invasion of zombies doing the Gangnam Style. I'll take the regular zombies-that-try-to-eat-you variety anytime.
- Best way to get people to forgive you for flubbing the lines you're reading from the teleprompter? Give a giddy laugh and just start over. Hey, it worked for Kaley.
- Best presenter dialogue: Olivia Munn and Johnny Galecki trying to out-country each other. Olivia won, of course.
- Most nail-biting wardrobe moment, Part 1: Taylor Swift and her cleavage (or sternum) baring white dress.
- Most awkward send-off music: Playing a One Direction song after Taylor Swift gave her acceptance speech. I don't know why I know this and why I know him... but dear producers of the People's Choice Awards, Taylor and Harry Styles just broke up, like days before your show. Although, this doesn't top playing an LMFAO song after Dave Grohl just gave a speech about keeping rock music relevant in the last Grammys.
- Best background story: Criminal Minds' Shemar Moore made the introduction for Alicia Keys (who, by the way, looked all young and fresh) and her performance of "Girl on Fire" by telling the audience the story of his their first meeting ten years ago. After asking her out on a date, Alicia replied, "Look here son, I respect your flirt game, but my man situation is handled.".
- Which People's Choice Awards producer/staff member is in love with The Wanted so much that it warranted the cameras cutting to them all the time?
- While not perfect and he had a tendency to flub reading what he wrote, Adam Sandler's acceptance speech this year trumps last year's speech by a mile. Make that many, many, many, many miles.
- Best presenter skit: Monica Potter and Thomas Anderson's intentionally bad flash mob routine, complete with awkward moves and performing splits in the end.
- Best People's Choice Winner - Runner-up: The Wanted, who looked shocked that they trumped One Direction and because they've never won anything ever, then capped off their acceptance speech by fulfilling a promise to Ellen Degeneres and sang "Afternoon Delight".
- Best People's Choice Winner: Jennifer Lawrence, who began her speech by announcing that she's sweating so much she just might drop her crystal trophy and then said that Robert Downey, Jr. should know, since she sweated all over him.... when she shook his hand. Girl is funny. So funny, I'd be genuinely pissed if she didn't win any major "serious" award for Silver Linings Playbook.
- Jason O'Mara! Bring back Terra Nova!
- Most nail-biting wardrobe moment, Part 2: Ellen Pompeo and her skirt's slit that was cut nearly up to there... you know, there.
- Favorite People's Choice Winner: Nathan Fillion. I'm loving the People's Choice Awards for this, because Castle and its awesome cast doesn't get enough love in other award shows.
- Best Trophy Hand-off: Naomi Watts gets an ultra long and hammy kiss on the cheek while handing Robert Downey, Jr. his trophy. Also, awesome acceptance speech that included a shout-out for Naomi Watts' performance in The Impossible, sending love to and receiving love from the fans, and dedicating the award to a fan who recently passed away.
