Teen Choice Awards 2011

It's the time of the year again when the teenagers of America vote for their favorite programs and celebrity.  It is also the time for an awards show where every sentence, whether during the announcement of nominees or winners' acceptance speeches, is prompted by the shrieking of teenage girls (or at least I think they're all girls).

Okay, we all know that the teenage population isn't really our image of an official award giving body.  But there is good reason why this is an annual event and attended by big celebrities.

The teenage demographic is important.  They are a great indicator of trends.  They are the ones who are passionate and loyally follow television shows and celebrities.  They make up a sizable chunk of the movie-going public, and at many instances dragging their parents, who are the ones who actually pay for the tickets.  And at their impressionable ages, they (meaning, their parents) are the ones who will actually buy the myriad merchandises related to their favorite celebrities, TV series and movies.

Hosted by the Big Bang Theory's Kaley Cuoco, the awards show dished out the usual funny banter and awarding of what is probably the largest trophy ever made... a Teen Choice Award surfboard.  I kind of liked the theme of some of the spiels, with Kaley, the many celebrity presenters, and some random teenagers educating the audience about the national ceiling debt, relevant political issues and other such themes.  It was informative (kind of), without being cloying.

Memorable moments include Ashton Kutcher singing Katy Perry's Teenage Dream during his acceptance speech.  Appearing with Maggie Q, wrestlers John Cena and the Miz were confusing and inappropriate in expressing their love for Glee.  My hands down favorite would have to be Chuck's Zachary Levi, who donned a Nerd HQ shirt, knee-high bright pink socks and super short shorts, which I thought would be a veritable wardrobe fail when he decided to prop his leg up a ping pong table.  Oh, and Charice (represent!) was there to present Demi Lovato with the Inspire award.

Here are the list of winners from the recently-concluded show.  If you're wondering where the music category winners, and other Teen Choice miscellaneous awards (Choice Hottie, Vampire, etc.) are, I decided to just post the ones relevant to the interests I blog about.  If you want the full list, you can check out E! Online's article on the event results.
