Peps' Anime Rundown: 2011 Ongoing Winter & Spring Series Picks

As I mentioned in my previous advisory, this is one of two posts regarding my current anime viewing list.

Many anime end after a 12 or 13-episode run.  There are some, however, that are still ongoing despite premiering last winter and spring.  From the shounen anime categories, I particularly enjoy Tiger & Bunny and Ao no Exorcist.  I was excited when the former was released by Sunrise, the same animation studio that produced Cowboy Bebop.  The sole slice of life anime in the group, Hanasaku Iroha, is one of my top picks out of all the anime that I'm watching, new or ongoing, primarily because of its many endearing characters.  I can't wait for any of these series to finish so I can share my thoughts on them.

So, here are my ongoing anime picks from the previous seasons that I continue to watch.

Tiger & Bunny
Sternbild City is home to people called "Next," who use their special abilities to protect the people as superheroes. These heroes solve cases and save lives so they can wear sponsor logos or acquire "hero points." Their activities are documented on the popular program "Hero TV," which picks the "King of Heroes" in a yearly ranking. The veteran hero Wild Tiger has always preferred to work alone, but now he's been assigned the rookie Barnaby Brooks Jr., who has a different perspective on being a superhero.

Ao no Exorcist
This world consists of two dimensions joined as one, like a mirror. The first is the world in which the humans live, Assiah. The other is the world of demons, Gehenna. Ordinarily, travel between the two, and indeed any kind of contact between the two, is impossible. However the demons can pass over into this world by possessing anything that exist within it. Satan is the god of demons, but there's one thing that he doesn't have, and that's a substance in the human world that is powerful enough to contain him. For that purpose he created Rin, his son from a human woman, but will his son agree to his plans? Or will he become something else...? An exorcist?

Hanasaku Iroha
When her mother runs off with her latest boyfriend, Matsumae Ohana is sent to live with her grandmother, who she has never met nor spoken to. Her grandmother is not pleased to find Ohana on her doorstep, and sets her to work at her Taisho-era (1920s) hot springs inn. It's not a lifestyle that Ohana would have chosen, but she decides not to be discouraged and to make the most of her difficult circumstances.

SKET Dance
The anime focuses on the misadventures of the "Campus Support Group" or "Sket-Dan", of Kaimei Gakuen, a club devoted to solving any and all problems brought to it by the staff or student body for the general improvement of campus life. Due to its general lack of meaningful assignments and unglamorous 'group of handymen' reputation, the organization is treated with widespread contempt and is composed of only three members.

Beelzebub
The story follows the "strongest juvenile delinquent", Oga Tatsumi, a first year in "Ishiyama High" the school for delinquents. One day while sleeping next to a river he sees a man floating in it. He pulls him to shore and the man splits in half revealing a baby boy. This baby is the son of the demon king and he has been chosen as the one to raise it with the baby's demon maid Hilda. The story follows his life with the child and at the delinquent school.

Of course, long-running series Naruto, Bleach and One Piece are included in my anime viewing list, even if I already follow their manga versions.  I plan to do the same for Katekyo Hitman Reborn! and Fairy Tail.

You can also check out my anime picks that premiered this summer in Japan.
